On page 9 of The Maypole Manual you may notice a sketch by Canaletto, depicting the Jubilee Ball, as it appeared May 24th 1759. This image on first glance shows the first picture of maypole ribbons in use in the UK. However, there has been some controversy around this image, and whether the image is a true representation of the events of that day.
